Mr. Charles L. "Bus" Scranton, 84, of Payson, died at 2:13 a. m. Saturday (November 17, 2001) in Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, AZ.

Born March 21, 1917 in Adams, IL., Mr. Scranton was the son of Hiram J. and Florence Harris Scranton. He married Dorothy Schnellbecher on October 30, 1940 in Bluff Hall Church. She survives.

Mr. Scranton was a member of the Payson Congregational United Church of Christ where he and his wife were charter members of the Couples Club. He also has a dual membership with the East Mesa Christian Church in Mesa, AZ. Bus was a member of the Adams County Farm Bureau and the Payson Masonic Lodge No. 379, serving as treasurer for 25 years, Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield, Quincy Consistory, Plainville Lions Club and the Uncle Sam's Club of Good Samaritan Home. He served 35 years on the Payson Old Settlers Picnic Committee and 22 years as treasurer of the Payson New Cemetery.

Mr. Scranton was a graduate of Seymour High School in Payson. After their marriage, the Scrantons farmed for 20 years. In 1954, Mr. Scranton took over the Adams County F. S. truck service for 24 years. He retired in 1976.

Also surviving is a daughter, Lynda Kraemer and her husband Charles of Lake Bluff, IL.; four step grandchildren; ten step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Scranton was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Terry J. Scranton; and two brothers, Melvin Scranton and Richard Scranton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 in the Payson Congregational United Church of Christ by the Rev. Rick Welch. Burial will be in the Payson New Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon from Noon until the time of services at the church. Payson Masonic Lodge No. 379 will conduct services immediately preceding the funeral service.

Memorials may be made to the Payson Congregational United Church of Christ or the Payson New Cemetery Association.
