HOWARD J. WHEELER
 
Mr. Howard J. Wheeler, 68 of 2219 Rancho Blvd. died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday (February 26, 2002) in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.

Born May 6, 1933 in Quincy, Mr. Wheeler was the son of Charles and Amy Northup Wheeler. He married Connie Waack on July 29, 1951 in Quincy. She survives.

Mr. Wheeler served his country in the Korean War where he received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars. He also served in the Illinois National Guard for over thirteen years. Howard was a member and past commander of the Liberty American Legion Post #640. He was past commander of the Adams County Chapter of the American Legion and a member of the Korean War Veterans Association. Mr. Wheeler was also a member and past governor of the Quincy Loyal Order of Moose #986 and a member of the Quincy Masonic Lodge #296 and the Quincy Consistory. He and his wife were members of the Quincy Gold Wing Road Riders Association of which he was a Chapter N Director. They enjoyed taking trips on their motorcycles and collecting donkey figurines.

Mr. Wheeler was employed as a machine operator at Colt Compression for 36 years until his retirement in 1995.

Also surviving is one son, Steven A. Wheeler and his wife Nancy P. of Hampton, VA.; five daughters, Patricia M. Wheeler of Quincy, Trudy E. Wheeler of Fowler, Penny Lynn Craft and her husband Arthur of Quincy, Kimberly K. Shannon of Quincy, and Alice Ann Wheeler of West Point; seven grandchildren, Brian C.E. Mixer and his wife Jennifer of North Platt, NB., Tim J. Wheeler of Fowler, Bobbi Jo Craft of Herrin, IL., Bonnie Lynn Wheeler of Hampton, VA., Robin Lynn Craft of Quincy, Christina Wheeler of Hampton, VA., and Josh M. Shannon of Quincy; one great grandson, Brian S. Mixer of North Platt, NB., several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; his mother in law, Margaret M. Waack of Quincy; and special friends, Leanne Dieterle, Tyler, and Kathryn, all of Fowler, Melanie Motley of Quincy, and Laura and Kayla Layton of West Point, and Ricky Grant of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Charles Wheeler; one sister, Tiny Altgilbers; and two half sisters, Harriet Ertel and Dorothy Durk.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Larry Smith. Burial will be in Payson New Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Liberty American Legion Post #640.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday until the time of services at the funeral home. Quincy Masonic Lodge #296 will conduct Masonic services Friday evening at 7:00.
