BARBARA J. COOKSON
Barbara Jean Cookson, 82, of Quincy, died at 8:24 p.m. Tuesday (October 11, 2016) in the Bickford Cottages, where she has resided since 2014.
Born May 19, 1934 in Plymouth, Illinois, Barb was the daughter of Harvey and Ruth Fugate Payne. On September 25, 1955 she married her high school sweetheart, Gerald "Jerry" Cookson in Plymouth, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2007.
Barb was a 1951 graduate of Plymouth High School where she was a cheerleader, played in the band and was active with the Girls Athletic Association.
Barb was instrumental in the building of Faith Lutheran Church in Augusta and was the first member baptism at the church. After moving to Quincy, she was an active member of Luther Memorial Church, where she was a member of WICKS and helped served many funeral luncheons over the years. She was a member of Spring Lake Country Club where she was an avid golfer. She also enjoyed League Bowling, collecting antiques, traveling to antique car shows across the United States showing their award winning 1968 Shelby convertibles. Barb loved to spend time with her family, boating at the Lake of the Ozarks and cooking the meals and hosting many of the family holiday dinners
Barb and her husband Jerry operated the Cookson Family Funeral Homes in Plymouth and Augusta, Illinois until moving to Quincy in 1965 when the family purchased the Daugherty Funeral Home at 6th & Spring. In 1968 they built the Cookson Daugherty Colonial Funeral Home at 24th & Spring which they operated until 1978 when the Cookson family purchased Zehender Robinson Stormer Funeral Home and the business was merged to the current location at 1435 State Street in Quincy. Barb was the Secretary and Bookkeeper for several years until her retirement.
Survivors include a daughter, Robin Leonard (Howard) of Quincy; a son, Rick Cookson of Columbus, IN; a grandson, Seth Leonard (Maria) of Quincy; one great grandson due in January; three step grandchildren, George Leonard (Angie) of Payson, IL, Ginny Owsley (Donnie) of Quincy, Bobbi Leonard; seven step great grandchildren; one step great great grandchild; a brother in law, Rod Cookson (Karen) of Quincy; a sister in law, Dellene Payne of Good Hope, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry; and a brother, William "Bill" Payne.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Metz officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Friday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.
