Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Hochgraber, 90, of Quincy, begins her eternal rest after passing Sunday morning (August 6, 2017) in her log cabin home.
Born January 25, 1927 in Adams County, Illinois, Betty was the daughter of William and Agnes Zimmerman Roehl. She married Wesley Hochgraber on September 23, 1950 in Carthage, Illinois. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000, two years before his passing on September 10, 2003.
Betty graduated from Quincy Notre Dame High School in 1945. She worked as a telephone operator at the local telephone company and at Camp Ellis before she married and began working as a secretary and bookkeeper for Wes* house moving business, which he established in 1946.
Betty was devoted in her faith and was a longtime member of Madison Park Christian Church and the EverReady class. She was also an eager supporter and served on the board of directors of the Friends of the Log Cabin Association, the group of trustees who maintain the village of log cabins on Quinsippi Island. Betty also loved and enjoyed travel. For many years, she and Wes traveled extensively throughout both the United States in their motorhome, wintering in Arizona and Florida, and even abroad in the Netherlands visiting friends.
She will be missed greatly by her loving family and her many, many friends. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Sue Whittaker and her husband Roger and Carol Ann Hochgraber all of Quincy; three grandchildren, Shaun Whittaker of Quincy, Heather Keller-Giltner (Scott Giltner) of Quincy, and Sarah Campbell (Jeremy) of Hannibal, MO; a great grandson, Wesley Whittaker of Quincy; a brother in law, Earl Hochgraber (Joan) of Quincy; a sister in law, Ramona Hochgraber of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hochgraber was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wesley; a sister, Mary Eising; a brother, Rich Roehl of California; three brothers-in-law, Norbert Eising of Quincy, Virgil Hochgraber of Quincy and Edgar "Ted" Hochgraber, who was killed in action on August 14, 1944.
Funeral services will be be held Friday morning at 10:30 at Madison Park Christian Church with Pastor Larry Smith and Pastor Keith Ehresman officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Friday morning from10:00 until the time of services at Madison Park Christian Church.
