Brig. General William Schoonover, 85, of Grovetown, Georgia, formerly of Clayton and Quincy, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday (November 16, 2014) in Kentwood Extended Care in Augusta, Georgia.
Born January 24, 1929 in Clayton, Illinois, William was the son of Thales and Harriette Stevens Schoonover. He married Judy Grimmer on October 22, 1948 in Quincy. She survives.
Brig. General Schoonover began his military career at 17 when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the end of World War II. He then joined the Illinois Army National Guard in 1947 and served on active duty at the Quartermaster School, in the 123rd Infantry Regiment, 44th division, and in 1952-53 in the 1169th Engineer Combat Group in Korea. After his release from active duty he returned to the Illinois National Guard where he has served in various assignments and command and staff positions. He served in the 733rd Ordnance Battalion, 733rd Maintenance Battalion, Illinois Emergency Operations Headquarters, 44th Support Center-Rear Area Operations, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment of the Illinois Army National Guard and State Area Command. He was appointed Warrant Officer in 1951 and commissioned Lieutenant in 1954. He was promoted to Captain in 1958, Major in 1962, Lieutenant Colonel in 1970, Colonel in 1978, and Brigadier General in 1984 when he then retired as the State Maintenance Officer of Illinois.
His military awards and decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, State of Illinois Distinguished Service Medal, and State of Illinois Long and Honorable Military Service Medal, among many others.
A graduate of Quincy High School, William earned his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois. After military retirement , he was Named Post Engineer at Valley Forge Military Academy and Junior College in Valley Forge, PA for 2 years. Then moved to Florida for a 8 1/2 year career as Facilities Manager for Saint Mary Magdelan Catholic Church and Schools of the Orlando Florida diocese.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Judy; three daughters, Kathryn Lee Schlueter and her husband, Dr. Jeff Schlueter of Joshua, TX, Diana Lynn Bethel and her husband, James D. of Millen, GA and Deborah Burke and her husband, Alan of Grovetown, GA; six grandchildren; Jennifer Anderle Rotundo of Burleson, TX, William Scott Anderle of Joshua, TX, Joseph Donald Bethel of Millen, GA, Jack Travis Bethel of Millen, GA, Austin Alan Burke of Grovetown, GA, and Daniel Bryce Burke of Grovetown, GA; six great grandchildren; Christopher Clark, Jacob Anderle, Gracie Anderle, Sophie Bethel, Sydney Bethel, and Zoey Bethel; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mr. Schoonover was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Capt. Richard T. Schoonover; sister -in -law, Joyce Schoonover; Niece, Christy Schoonover Bazemore; and Nephew, Rick Schoonover.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 in St. John's Anglican Parish Chapel by the Rev. Patrick Smith. Burial with Military Honors by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home .
