Bryce Michel, 91, of Quincy, formerly of Plainville, Illinois, died at 9:33 p.m. Monday (November 27, 2017) at his home in Sunset Home Villas.
Born November 22, 1926 in Adams County, Illinois, Bryce was the son of Floyd and Lydia Goertz Michel. He married Freda Putz on April 10, 1949 in Liberty, Illinois. She preceded him in death on September 17, 1961. He married L. Joan Lawrence on June 9, 1962 in Plainville, Illinois. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2012.
An avid sportsman, Bryce loved baseball, fast pitch softball and bowling, bowling in leagues for 28 years. Always active in his community, Bryce was an active booster for all Payson athletic teams, was a volunteer and Honorary Member of F.F.A., drove a school bus for the Payson School District for over 50 years and volunteered for many years with the Payson/Fall Creek Fire Department. Mr. Michel was awarded the Masonic Community Builder's Award by the Payson/Plainville Masonic Lodge for his volunteer work.
Following his graduation from Quincy High School in 1944, Bryce began farming in the Plainville area until 1960. In 1959, he became the owner of Michel Hardware and was a self employed contractor in construction, plumbing and excavation. Mr. Michel retired in 2007.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Althoff (Carl) of Plainville, IL; two sons, Elvin Michel (Laurie) of Crossville, TN and Gary Michel (Debra) of Vancouver, WA; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Clinging (Chad), Preston Althoff (Megan), Brandi Sperry (Brian), Nathan Michel (Chelsea), Christina Michel (fiance', Matthew Brye), Justin Michel and Melissa Johnson ( J. J.); ten great grandchildren; a sister in law, Jean Bowman (Richard) of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Michel was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; two great grandchildren, Cassaundra Clinging and Chandler Clinging; and two sisters, Myrl Dehart and Esther McGrew.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy with Pastor Lois Sorrill officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturday morning from 9:30 until the time of service at the funeral home in Quincy.
