Carl Elton Atwell

CARL  E.  ATWELL

   Carl Elton Atwell, 83, of Quincy, formerly of Andover, New York, passed away at 8:17 a.m. Sunday (August 4, 2019) at his home in Quincy.  Carl is the father of former Quincy University Athletic Director and current Culver Stockton University Athletic Director, Pat Atwell.

   Born September 13, 1935 in Wellsville, New York, Carl was the son of Earl and Gertrude Jackson Atwell and was raised on a Dairy Farm that the family moved to in 1941.  He was a 1953 graduate of Andover Central High School where he excelled in athletics, lettering 4 years in baseball and soccer and 2 years with varsity basketall.   

   On October 10, 1953, he married J. Corinne Hyland in Andover, New York.  She preceded him in death on September 24, 2006.

   Mr. Atwell served his country in the U. S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

   Carl attended St. Peter Catholic Church in Quincy.  He was a member of the Lynch-Burgett American Legion Post No. 397 where he was active with the Color Guard, International Association of Machinist, the Moose Lodge and was a Past President of the Andover, New York school board.  An avid sportsman with a passion for baseball, Carl was a longtime youth baseball coach and umpire for many baseball and softball leagues in New York. He was a member of the New York State Umpire Association and was honored by being elected to the Allegany County Sports Hall of Fame.  Carl was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.  He enjoyed hunting, listening to country music and was an active supporter of Red Cross Blood Drives, donating over 22 gallons in his lifetime.  Carl was devoted to his family and he loved  following their activities.

   Mr. Atwell was employed for many years for Dresser-Rand in Wellsville, New York. He was elected as the union Vice President in 1960 and retired in 1999 as assistant plant manager.

   Survivors include his son, Pat Atwell (Lisa) of Quincy; three daughters, Jeanne Johnston (Wayne) of Allegany, N.Y., Eileen Palmer (Ben) of Alfred Station, N.Y. and Suzy Atwell (Roanne Kovach) of Penfield, N.Y.; ten grandchildren, Melissa Atwell, Eric Atwell, Owen Johnston (Kristy), Jeffrey Johnston (Val), Angela Honeck (Jason), Ben Palmer IV (Kate), Gregory Palmer (Lindsy), Patrick Palmer (Ashly), Andrew Palmer (Lisa) and Eden Palmer; twenty great grandchildren; a sister in law, Lorraine Joyce of Andover, N.Y.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Atwell was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Lavina Atwell; his wife, Corinne; a great granddaughter, Olivia Johnston; two brothers, Ronnie Atwell (Irene) and Wayne Atwell (Bev); and a sister, Doris Breiding (Vic). 

   Local arrangements are in the care of the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

   Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Andover, New York. 
Burial with Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Andover, New York.

   The family will meet with friends Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville, New York.

   Memorials may be made to the Culver Stockton Athletic Department or Quincy University Baseball.
