DANIEL EDWARD COOK
Daniel E. Cook, 83 of Quincy died at 9:46 p.m. Thursday (February 22, 2018) in St. Lukes Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri.
Born October 9, 1934 in Georgetown, IL. Dan was the son of Everett and Hazel Williams Cook. He married Mary K. Hilgenbrink on December 28, 1963 at St. Francis Catholic Church. She survives.
Dan served his country in the U. S. Army with the Army of Occupation in Germany. He enjoyed oil painting, bird watching and traveling to visit his children and grandchildren. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox and rooted for the University of Illinois. Dan graduated from St. Catherine High School in Racine, Wisconsin and received his Bachelors Degree at Quincy College. He earned his Master's Degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and his law degree from Northern Illinois University.
Mr. Cook began his coaching and teaching career at St. Dominic's grade school in Breese, Illinois and later at McCooey High School in Hannibal. He then became an assistant principal and football coach at Christian Brothers High School in Quincy. Dan continued to coach and was Principal in the Nauvoo and West Pike School Districts. After retiring from teaching Dan became a practicing attorney. He was also an Adams County Public Defender for several years until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife Mary, three daughters Colleen Cook of Ballwin, MO; Kathleen Galloway (Edward) of Nashville, TN and Erin Cook of Quincy; two sons Kerry Cook (Dana) of Richmond Hill, GA and Ryan Cook (Katie) of Hannibal, MO; five grandchildren Brian Galloway of Knoxville, TN, Sean Galloway of Nashville, TN, Ian Galloway of Nashville, TN, Aiden Cook of Richmond Hill, GA and Daniel Cook of Richmond Hill, GA. Also surviving is a brother Thomas "Tom" Cook (Claudia) of Lafayette, IN and a brother-in-law Robert Hilgenbrink (Donna) of Shiloh, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews .
Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Anne Bennett and a brother Joseph Cook
Prayer services will be held Wednesday morning 9:30 a.m. in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter with Monsignor Leo Enlow and Rev. Don Blickhan officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Homeward Bound Waggin, K-9 Connection or St. Peter's Catholic Church.
