Donald R. "Don" Niemeyer, 86, of Quincy, died Tuesday (June 17, 2014) at the Illinois Veteran's Home in Quincy.
Born September 27, 1927 in Quincy, Don was the son of Richard E. and Edna A. Danhaus Niemeyer. He married Florence F. "Flo" Bockhold on October 17, 1968 in Quincy. She survives.
Mr. Niemeyer served his country in the U. S. Army during WWII.
Don had attended Salem Church before entering the Illinois Veteran's Home. He was a graduate of Quincy High School and attended Quincy College. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Don enjoyed taking short trips and loved the long walks he and Florence would take all over town.
Don was employed as a letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service for 30 years until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; three nephews, Roger Schoenekase (Peggy), Michael Smith (Debbie) and Bradley Smith (Joselyn) all of Quincy; six nieces, Joyce Ritterbusch (Jim) of Galena, IL, Jane Althide (Gale) of Basco, IL, Cheryl Wallin (Dennis) of Macomb, IL, Linda K. Smith-Cohee (Jim) of San Francisco, CA, Laurie Allen (Fred) of Quincy and Cathy Hilgenbrinck (Gary) of Quincy; two sisters in law, Alberta Engels of Quincy and Henrietta Smith of Quincy; and many loving great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Mr. Niemeyer was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers in law, Joseph Engels and Jay Harman Smith; and a sister in law, Dorothy Schoenekase and her husband, Robert "Bob".
Following Don's wishes, private graveside services with Military Honors will be held in Greenmount Cemetery by Pastor Steve Disseler. Casket bearer will be Roger Schoenekase, Gale Althide, Kody Althide and Kyle Althide.
The Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
In leiu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Illinois Veteran's Home Activity Fund.
