DOROTHY A. COOKSON
Dorothy A. Cookson, 85 of Montrose, Iowa, passed away Thursday evening (September 28, 2017) in her home.
Born December 11, 1931 in Port Byron, Illinois, Dorothy was the daughter of Russell Joy and Opal Winnivere Howard Cookson. Her longtime companion and love of her life Jerry L. Simmons preceded her in death on November 5, 1999.
A 1950 graduate of Warsaw High School, Dorothy was very active in the Lee County Democratic Party serving as a precinct committeewoman. She was a personal friend and campaigned for the former Governor of Iowa, Tom Vilsack and Senator Tom Harkin. Dorothy was well known throughout the Tri-State area for raising registered German Shepherd puppies. Her favorite and personal German Shepherd was killer the Guard Dog.
Dorothy was employed at Sheller Globe Manufacturing in Keokuk, Iowa for over 42 years retiring in 1992. After retiring from Sheller Globe, she worked at the Montebello Manor Nursing Home in Hamilton retiring in 2006.
Ms. Cookson was preceded in death by her parents and her companion Jerry Simmons.
Survivors include her loving sister Betty DuMond of Largo,FL; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 am in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with pastor Steve Disseler officiating. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Great River Hospice or PAW animal shelter.
