Eugene "Gene" Holford, 94, of Quincy, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday (November 9, 2017) in Good Samaritan Home.
Born February 11, 1923 in Quincy, Gene was the son of Roy J. and Irma Matilda Barth Holford. He married Irma L. Sparks on April 23, 1950 in Vermont Street United Methodist Church in Quincy. Gene and Irma celebrated 63 years of marriage until her death on October 4, 2013.
Mr. Holford served his country as an Army Combat Engineer in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WW II.
Gene was an active member of Luther Memorial Church where he served on the Church Council, was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Evangelism and Stewardship committees. He was a life member of the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and was a member of Lambert Masonic Lodge No. 659, Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield, Quincy Shrine Club, Quincy High Twelve Club where he had the distinction of being the oldest living member in the State of Illinois, Adams County Farm Bureau and the Quincy Life Underwriters. Gene also served on the Board of Directors and was Past President of the Quincy Senior Center. He enjoyed gardening and loved to play golf and was a member of Westview Golf Course. He and Irma enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Q City Square Dancers and they enjoyed the many years they would spend the winter months at Silveridge in Mesa, Arizona.
Gene was a 1941 graduate of Quincy High School and earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Illinois in 1948. He was employed by Country Financial and Insurances Services for over 34 years, retiring in 1985. During his career, Gene was awarded the 10 year All American Designation Award, 16 year All Star Award, 16 year National Quality Award and the 5 year Health Quality Award. Gene was also a 30 year member of the National Association of Life Underwriters and was a Past President of the West Central Illinois Association of Life Underwriters where he served as Secretary from 1978-1980.
Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Jurgens (Dick) of Towanda, IL; two grandchildren, Dr. Valerie Jurgens of Austin, TX and Benjamin Jurgens (Dr. Katherine Kosiv-Jurgens) of Benton, AR; a great granddaughter, Kalyna Iris Jurgens; his sister, Lois Lepper (Arthur) of Quincy; his brother in law, Raymond Baxter of Waukegan, IL; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Holford was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irma; his sister, Mary Ann Baxter; two brothers, Marvin Holford (Frances) and Loren Holford (Florence); and his brother in law, Charles Sparks (Mardelle).
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Good Samaritan Home for the loving and compassionate care that was given to Gene .
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in Luther Memorial Church with Pastor Tony Metz officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday morning from 9:30 until the time of services at Luther Memorial Church.
