   Eugene R. "Gene" Hesse, 86, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of Independence, Missouri, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (March 23, 2016) at the Illinois Veterans Home.

   Born March 14, 1930 in Mendon, Illinois, Gene was the son of William A. and Ada Mae Allensworth Hesse.  He married Wilma Clementine Shouse on August 7, 1970 in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death.

   Mr. Hesse served his country as an aircraft mechanic in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War.

   Gene enjoyed dancing and attending social events. He was a creative person and artist who loved to paint, working primarily with oil paints. Gene will be remembered by many family and friends for the artworks that he gifted to them.

   Gene was employed as a heavy equipment operator for 30 years in Kansas City, working for Reno Construction, Clarkson Construction and Tobin Construction until his retirement in 1995.  He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 101 in Kansas City, Missouri.

   Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Schneider of Quincy and Eileen Clapper (Rick) of Garden City, MO; two brothers, Jerry Hesse and William Hesse (Teresa) both of Quincy; a sister in law, Ginger Hesse of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Hesse was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma; a brother, Larry Hesse; a sister in law, Patti Hesse; and a brother in law, John Schneider; a nephew, Gary Schneider; and a niece, Jill Beecham.

   Cremation has been accorded to Mr. Hesse.  Memorial services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Greg Javaux. Inurnment with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and the Scott AFB Funeral Honor Guard will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Monday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home Activity Fund.
