Florence M. (Jones) Halsey

May 23, 1918 ~ April 8, 2015 (age 96)

   Florence M. Halsey, a longtime Paloma, Illinois resident, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (April 8, 2015) in her home in Paloma.

   Born May 23, 1918 in Brown County, Illinois, Florence was the daughter of Frederick A. and Minnie Jane Waters Jones.  She married William Newton on August 12, 1934 in Carthage, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1969. She married Harold Halsey in 1974. He preceded her in death in 1978.

   Florence enjoyed crocheting, quilting and ceramics. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

   During WW II, Florence worked in Alton, Illinois making ammunition and later worked at Electric Wheel in Quincy.  She loved her community of Paloma and became Post Master of the Paloma Post Office, a position she held for over 30 years.  Florence was also a licensed hairdresser for 67 years, operating a salon from her home, which her son, Bill operates yet today.

   Florence was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara Jane Mowen; a son in law, Harold Mowen; two brothers, Ralph Jones and Rupert Jones; and a sister, Inez Beard.

   Survivors include her son, William "Bill" Newton of Paloma; four grandchildren, Charlotte Mowen Green (Randy) of Barry, IL, Roger Mowen of Quincy, Rebecca Mowen Bixler (Kevin) of Crane Hill, AL and Marvin Mowen (Jeanna) of  Fowler, IL; ten great grandchildren, Heather Green Lish (Rick), Melinda Green Grewe (Nathan), Scott Green (Heather), Joshua Green, Brady Mowen, Keegan Thiele Bixler, Kelsey Bixler, Brenden Mowen, Shane Mowen and Jesse Nemecek; twelve great great grandchildren, Ricky, Caleb, Skylar, Makenzie, Ashley, Alexander, Danielle, Joshua, Alexandria, Aydan, Maya and Collin; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Nathan Grewe.  Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.

   Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturday until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the Paloma Community Club.
