Gary M. McEwen

May 7, 1945 ~ April 11, 2018 (age 72)


   Gary M. McEwen, 72, of Quincy, passed away at 6:44 a.m. Wednesday (April 11, 2018) in his home.

   Born May 7, 1945 in Shelbina, Missouri, Gary was the son of James and Viola Snow McEwen.  He married Marlene G. Todtmann on April 1, 1979 in Quincy.  She survives.

   Mr. McEwen served his country in the U. S. Navy for 3 years.

   An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and sportsman, Gary loved playing softball in various leagues when he was younger. He was a train enthusiast and loved collecting model trains and John Deere collectibles and enjoyed spending two weeks each year seeing friends while attending the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. A family oriented man, Gary will be remembered as an awesome husband, dad, grandpa and brother.

   Gary was a former member of Salem Church where he was active with the Men's Brotherhood, Salem Softball team and as a head usher. He later attended services and was an active member of the Quincy Salvation Army where he was active with the Salvation Army Men's Club. Gary currently attends The Crossing.

   Gary was employed for 35 years for Gardner Denver Company. He later was employed at the Salvation Army Thrift Store and then became the manager at the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter for several years until his retirement in 2007.

   Survivors include his wife, Marlene; four children, Missy Runser of Quincy, Leanne Smith (Larry II) of Ashland, MO, James Broeker (Christine) of Quincy and Tracy Broeker of Quincy; thirteen grandchildren, Stacia Anders (Tony), Zachary Biesterfeld, Robert Runser, Gary Runser, Larry Smith III, Landyn Smith, Lachlan Smith, Brandon Broeker, Eric Broeker, Gabriella Broeker, Nathan Broeker, Tyler Martin and Christian Carson; five great grandchildren, Ryan Biesterfeld, Blake Anders, Max Anders, Lillie Anders and LeHana Smith; a brother, Terry McEwen (Barb) of Quincy; his mother in law, Gertrud Telger of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Gary was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Debra McEwen in infancy and Stacia McEwen; and a brother, James Meredith McEwen Jr.

   Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Major Andrew Miller officiating.  Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 4:00 to 7:00 and Monday morning from10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the Quincy Salvation Army or the Quincy Humane Society.
