GILBERT E. FELD SR.
Mr. Gilbert E. "Gil" Feld Sr., 84, of 639 York Apartment 318, Quincy, formerly of 3205 Lawrence Road, died at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday (May 30, 2012) in his home.
Born October 15, 1927 in Quincy, Gil was the son of Aldo and Ruth Meyer Feld. He was married to Carolyn L. Starrett. He married Bernice Wiskirchen Whelan on May 8, 1999 in Quincy. She survives.
Gil was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and was active with Cursillo and the St. Paul Society, and the Holy Name Society at St. Mary Catholic Church. He was also a member of South Side Boat Club, and volunteered for many years at the Senior Citizens Center. Gil enjoyed boating, camping and tinkering with things, but his greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren.
Mr. Feld worked several years at Motarola Inc, before joing the Quincy Police Dept. in 1958 were he served as a Patrol Officer for 20 years, retiring in 1978. He served under many fine Police Chiefs and was always proud to say his son, and grandson followed the same career choice to help protect their community. He also owned and operated South Side Laundry mat at 8th and Madison for over 35 yeays. He enjoyed visiting with his customers and fixing the machines himself. Following his retirement from the Quincy Police Department Gil worked part time for Western Ready Mix transporting concrete to construction sites, including the construction of the Bay View Bridge. He was also worked part-time at Western Illinois Veterinarian Clinic assiting Doc Koch as needed, a job he loved.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice; two daughters, Brenda Crawford (George) of Baylis, IL and Laura Goehl (Mark) of Quincy; a daughter in law, Susan Feld of Quincy; eight grandchildren, Keith Crawford (Amy) of Baylis, IL, Kristie Carmitchel of Apache Junction, AZ, Kara Puterbaugh (Josh) of Pittsfield, IL, Kayla Crawford (fiancee', Jason Carpenter) of Quincy, Kendyl Crawford of Baylis, IL, Jennifer Hermann (Jason) of Quincy, Alaina Wagner (Todd) of Quincy and Adam Goehl (Joan) of Quincy; thirteen great grandchildren; a step daughter, Marlene Johnson (Ed) of Barry, IL; four step sons, Duane Whelan (Debbie) of Cincinnati, OH, Stan Whelan (Jan) of Ursa, IL, Rod Whelan (Dawn) of Quincy and Brent Whelan (Gina) of Burton, IL; thirteen step grandchildren; eleven step great grandchildren; a sister, Darlene Hunsaker (Orville) of South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Feld was preceded in death by his parents; a son Gilbert E. Feld Jr.; a sister, Mary Taylor; and a brother, Donald Feld.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and at 1:30 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Monsignor Michael Kuse. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 and Saturday from 12:30 until the time of services at the funeral home.
