JOHN PAUL HAYES
John Paul Hayes, 93 of Quincy passed away at 7:30 p.m. Sunday (June 24, 2018) in Sunset Home.
Born May 10, 1925 in Quincy, John was the first child of John Michael Cornlius Hayes and Lorene Hollyman. He was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and attended St. Francis Catholic School.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He entered in the service on September 9, 1943 and was discharged on January 17, 1946. John saw action in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland receiving 3 overseas service bars, 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
John was employed for several years delivering furniture for Harvey and Bennett Furniture Stores. His favorite pastime was fishing.
John married Mary Louis Young in 1955 in Quincy. He later was married on May 22, 1965 to Elsie Louise (Johnston) Welte in Quincy. To this union two children were born Mark Hayes and James Hayes.
Survivors include his wife Elsie of Quincy; two sons Mark Hayes of Fairfield, MN and James Hayes (Trish) of Quincy; a sister Jean Schoonover of Quincy; two step-daughters Janet Franken (LaVerne) of Quincy and Mary Orr (Roy) of San Diego, CA. Also surviving are two step-daughters from his previous marriage, Jean Steinkamp (Dean) of Quincy, Peggy Mayfield of Quincy and a step-son John "Sonny" Carnes along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers Joe, Norman, Bill, Leo and Albert.
Cremation has been accorded. There is no visitation but friends are invited to the graveside service Friday morning 10:30 a.m. at the Illinois Veterans Home Sunset Cemetery with Father Donald Blickhan officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
