JOHN H. MARTEN
John H. Marten, 87, of Quincy, passed away at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday (April 3, 2018) in his home.
Born July 23, 1930 in Maysville, Iowa, John was the son of Albert and Viola Meier Marten. He married Donna Cook on October 20, 1951 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. She survives.
Mr. Marten served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
John was a member of the Walcott, Iowa American Legion, Lambert Masonic Lodge No. 659, Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield, was a very active member of the Quincy Shrine Club Skeeter Patrol and a former member of the Quincy Moose Lodge. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with his friends and especially enjoyed following the activities of his children and his grandchildren.
John worked hard all his life to provide for his family. He began his career with Victoria Feed Company in Davenport, Iowa and moved up to manage their facility in Milan, Illinois. On March 1, 1965, John founded Feed Distributors, Inc. in Quincy and served as President and CEO of the company until his retirement on September 1, 2016.
Survivors include his wife Donna; two daughters, Raina Tappe of Quincy and Vickey Haxel (Michael) of Quincy; four grandchildren, Connor Haxel (Sarah), Blaise Haxel, Alyson Tappe and Austin Tappe all of Quincy; two great granddaughters, Preslea Haxel and Stella Haxel; a brother, Jim Marten (Karen) of Walcott, IA; four sisters in law, Dorothy Marten of Davenport, IA, Bea Marten of Long Grove, IA, Marilyn Marten of Big Rock, IA and Katie Cook of Davenport, IA; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Marten was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Corey Michael John Haxel; his son in law, Ted Tappe; three brothers, Elmer Marten, Lou Marten and Delmar Marten; a sister, Eleanor Abernathy; and two brothers in law, Dick Abernathy and Wayne Cook.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors by Payson V.F.W. Post 2061 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturday morning from 10:30 until the time of services at the funeral home. Lambert Masonic Lodge No. 659 will conduct Masonic Services Friday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Blessing Cancer Center or the Shriner's Childrens Hospital.
