JOHN H. HARBERTS
John Henry Harberts, 88, of Quincy, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday (March 8, 2015) in Blessing Hospital.
Born March 19, 1926 in Harmony Township, Illinois, John was the son of Christopher and Daisy Saathoff Harberts. He married his lifelong sweetheart, Carol Lois Kaufman on June 16, 1945 in Golden, Illinois. They celebrated 58 years of marriage until her death on April 10, 2004.
John attended school in Hancock and Adams County and farmed in the Golden area until 1958. In 1959, John moved to Quincy and worked with the Adams County Sherriff's Department, retiring with the rank of Captain in 1991. John was awarded the Exchange Club Officer of the Year in 1990. "Big John" as he was affectionately known, may best be remembered for the 13 years he served as "The Bouncer" at the Barn Night Club in Quincy.
An active member of Luther Memorial Church, John was also a member of the Illinois League of Municipal Employees and South Side Boat Club. John was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and a loyal fan of his Quincy Gems "family".
John never met a stranger and didn't know the meaning of the word no when giving from his heart to those in need. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his coffee buddies at Mr. Bill's. John's greatest joy was spending time with and attending the activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Kendall (John) of Quincy; a son, Michael Harberts (Betty) of Berthoud, CO; a daughter in law, Shari Harberts of Waukee, IA; ten grandchildren, Michele Stinnett (Kevin) of Quincy, Angela Gibson (John) of Quincy, John Harberts (Dawn) of Chariton, IA, Nicole Long (Tripp) of Orlando, FL, Heather Trimmer (Sean) of Decatur, IL, Chad Harberts of Decatur, IL, Greg Kendall (Monica) of Chesterfield, MO, Steve Kendall of Quincy, Kim Barnes (Jerome) and Jeremy Johnson both of Berthoud, CO; twenty one great grandchildren; and many other in his extended family.
Mr. Harberts was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; a son, Steve Harberts; a great granddaughter, Alexandra Elizabeth Stinnett; and three sisters, Marlene Ihnen, Marjorie Leenerts and Florine Flesner.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sunset Home, the staff on the fourth floor at the Quincy Senior Center, the staff at Blessing Hospital Intermediate Care, Dr. Pravin Patel for taking such good care of John for many years, and Pastor Tony Metz and all of John's church family.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 in Luther Memorial Church by Pastor Tony Metz. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and Thursday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at Luther Memorial Church.
Memorials may be made to the Luther Memorial Church Food Pantry, Quincy Humane Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
