February 19, 1921 ~ August 19, 2014 (age 93)

Katherine Louise (McCarl) Klassing, 93, of  Barry, Illinois, died at 8:28 a.m. Tuesday (August 19, 2014) in Blessing Hospital.

Katherine was born February 19, 1921, the only child of Fred and Bessie Lock McCarl. She married Dale A. Klassing on August 19, 1948 in Canton, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 6, 2009.

As a young child, Katherine enjoyed visiting her grandparents, Sarah Katherine Loscher McCarl and Orson and Louise Thompson Lock in the Barry, Illinois area.

Katherine attended Pin Oak School, a rural, one room school which was located a mile and a half from the McCarl home. Katherine walked to school daily unless the weather was inclement and then her parents would drive her to school either in the family car or if the dirt roads were too muddy, a buggy drawn by a team of her father's favorite horses.  Katherine then attended Barry High School, staying with her Grandmother McCarl through the school week.

High school was very rewarding for Katherine. She was a member of the Barry High School Typing Team and on the Honor Roll for all four years, being awarded the Honor B pin upon her graduation in 1939. She also was received the Activity Award as she excelled in vocal music. During her senior year, she received a Superior Rating as a mezzo-soprano soloist in the State Vocal Contest in Champaign, Illinois and an Excellent Rating in the National contest in Anderson, Indiana

After receiving two scholarship offers, Katherine chose to attend Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri where she was an Honor Roll student. She graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She later did graduate study from Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois.

Mrs. Klassing began her teaching career in a rural, one room school, Crabapple School in Pike County, Illinois, teaching 27 students in all eight grades for three years. She later taught in Barry, Plainville and retired from the Payson Seymour Elementary School in 1976 after a 35 year teaching career.

Following  her retirement, Katherine and her husband, Dale, operated the McCarl family farm, which was purchased at the end of the Civil War in 1865 by Katherine's great grandfather, Alexander McCarl. Today this farm is recognized by the State of Illinois as a Centennial Family Farm, being in the family for the last 149 years.

Katherine was a longtime member of the Plainville United Methodist Church where she served on various committees and sang for many weddings, funerals and special occasions. She was also a member of the Adams County Retired Teachers and Illinois Retired Teachers Association and a 60 year member of the Pike County No. 20 Order of Eastern Star.

An avid reader, Katherine also enjoyed embroidery, driving her car and spending time time with her pet cats or dogs.

Survivors include several cousins, Delia Moore; Mary Ellen Ala (Tom) and Christine Morrow (Steve) all of Barry, IL, Dwight Ala (Jan) of Winchester, IL, Jean Kay of Payson, IL, Virginia Jones of Ottumwa, IA, Larry Jones (Connie) and Linda Russell of Bloomfield, IA and Bev Clemensen (Chris) of Denver, CO.
