Lila Jane (Kurk) Fredericks

August 23, 1928 ~ February 5, 2017 (age 88)

Lila Jane  Fredericks, 88, of Quincy, died at 6:08 a.m. Sunday (February 5, 2017) in Good Samaritan Home.

Born August 23, 1928 in Quincy, Lila was the daughter of Clarence H. and Edith C. Schaich Kurk.  In 1943, Lila met Junior A. Fredericks while he was home on leave from the Army and they were married on January 29, 1947 in the St. Francis Rectory.  Junior preceded her in death on June 11, 1998.

Lila had a strong desire for an education and wished to attend high school. To do this, she moved to Quincy and became a housekeeper for an older couple, which gave her the funds she needed to go to school. She also had jobs at St. Mary Hospital, Kresge's and the Hosiery Mill while still in school. She fulfilled her desire and was a 1946 graduate of Notre Dame High School.  Following her graduation, Lila was employed in the office at Moorman Manufacturing. She took time off to care for her daughters until 1962, when she went to work at  J. C. Penny in downtown Quincy as seasonal Christmas help.  Lila turned that part time job into a management position. She was proud to play a vital role in the store's move to the Quincy Mall.  She retired on December 31, 1992 as Senior Merchandising Manager after a 30 year career with the company. Lila attributed her success to hard work and she  said, "I treated people like I wanted to be treated and it came back 100%."

Lila was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge No. 100 in Quincy and was a longtime volunteer at Blessing Hospital.  She was devoted to her family and friends. A happy part of her life was camping at Bayview Camp Ground on the weekends every summer.  Friends and laughter were important to Lila. She enjoyed going to coffee and being with her friends, especially on Facebook. Lila would tell people, "To have a friend, you have to be a friend."

Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl K. Moran (Nick) of Quincy; four grandchildren, Raymond E. Genenbacher (Lisa) of Quincy, Anthony D. Mallory of Quincy; Trenton F. Moran of Springfield, IL and Allison Jane Moran of Auburn, AL; four great grandchildren, Drew Genenbacher, Abby Genenbacher, Aden Genenbacher and Austin Genenbacher all of Quincy; a brother, Alvin C. Kurk (Carlene) of Quincy; two sisters, Sister Maretta (Norma) Kurk of Springfield, IL and Mary Ellen Lohman (Robert) of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
