Margaret Louise (Byerly) Kahler

August 30, 1917 ~ October 31, 2017 (age 100)

   Margaret Louise Kahler, 100, of Quincy, died at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday (October 31, 2017) at Bradford Villa in Quincy.

   Born August 30, 1917 in Quincy, Margaret Louise was the daughter of Charles and Agnes Wellman Byerly.  

   She attended St. Francis Solanus School for her elementary education, graduating with the highest honors. She enrolled at Notre Dame Academy and graduated as class Salutatorian which earned her a one year scholarship to Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She returned to Quincy and enrolled at Gem City Business College where she took secretarial courses.

   Upon her graduation from Gem City College, Louise took a part time job at Moorman Manufacturing until going to work for Adams County Clerk, Arthur Witte. She later took a secretarial position at Quincy Peoples Building and Loan until she moved to Peoria where she worked in the purchasing department at Catepillar Tractor Company. Margaret Louise then was hired by the Peoria & Pekin Union Railway Company where she worked for many years until her retirement in 1981.

   Louise loved to remain active and help others. Following her retirement, she was a volunteer at the information desk at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria for 10 years. She moved back to Quincy in 1992 and she continued her volunteer services at Blessing Hospital for many years.

   Louise's love for music began at an early age. She played Violin in the Notre Dame Orchestra while in High School and sang in the St. Francis Church Choir for several years, singing for many funeral masses.  She was an avid reader, enjoyed needlework and loved to travel.  Louise traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She especially enjoyed her visits to Hawaii, Alaska and the British Isles.

   Survivors include a sister, Betty Shackleton of Quincy; seven nieces and nephews, Barbara Allen of Las Cruces, NM, Donald Jochem (Patricia) of Santa Fe, NM, Dianne Person (Ken) of Westminster, S.C., Peggy Hassinger (Galen) of Silver Springs, MD, Allen Jochem of Quincy, David Shackleton (Becky) of Ft. Myers, FL and Sharon Jochem Schmidt (Mark) of Milwaukee, WI; and many loving great nieces and great nephews.

   Margaret Louise was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Marian Jochem.
   Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:00 at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church with Rev. Bob Barko officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Monday morning from 9:00 until the time of services at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.

   Arrangements are in the care of Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

   In Leiu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
