NANCY A. SELVY
Nancy Anne Selvy, 84, formerly of 3208 Lawrence Road, Quincy, died Friday evening December 9, 2011 at 7:50 pm in Good Samaritan Home.
Born September 21, 1927 in Quincy, Illinois, Nancy was the daughter of John J. (Joseph) and Leora B. Hutchison Tensing. She married Edward D. (Dean) Selvy on December 23, 1950 in Quincy. He died February 15, 2010.
A 1944 graduate of Quincy Senior High School, Nancy attended Gem City Business College, was initially employed by MoorMan Manufacturing Co. and then for 23 years at Sears, where she was Catalog Department Supervisor until her retirement. Nancy was very active in numerous Masonic organizations including Eastern Star, Miriam White Shrine, Ghazzeh Grotto Auxilary, Daughters of the Nile, DeMolay and Rainbow Mothers* Clubs. She was Past Worthy Matron of Alpha Chapter Order of Eastern Star where she was a member over 60 years and served as Grand Representative of Arizona and Grand Representative of Iowa in Illinois. She was also a past President of the Daughters of the Nile, DeMolay and Rainbow Mothers* Clubs.
Nancy was a past President of the Ellington Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association. She received the Silver Beaver Award for her work with the Boy Scouts of Saukee Area Council and the Grand Cross of Color for her contributions to Rainbow for Girls. Mrs. Selvy was an active volunteer for many years at Blessing Hospital, the American Red Cross, Vermont Street United Methodist Church and the Masonic Temple. She and her husband were avid supporters of Quincy High School Athletics and were inducted together into the Quincy High School Blue Devil Hall of Fame in 1997 as *Friends of the Program* in recognition of their personal contributions of time and talent over the years.
Mrs. Selvy was an active member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church including the Mary Martha Fellowship and the Double Ring Sunday School Class. She served on several church committees and for many years chaired the Annual Apple Butter Day event. She provided support to annual church bazaars and was coordinator for funeral luncheons and meals for parents of newborns. In 2003, the Vermont Street United Methodist Women honored her as *Woman of the Year*.
Survivors include three children, Linda Groves and her husband John, Richard E. Selvy and his wife Barbara and Jill Failor and her husband Steve, all of Quincy; eight grandchildren, Darin Kent and his wife Kelly of Quincy, John R. (J.R.) Groves and Alison L. Groves of Quincy, Andrew D. Selvy and his wife Katie of O*Fallon, Missouri, Jennifer Selvy of Quincy, Melissa Failor Edgar and her husband Justin of Liberty, Benjamin Failor and his wife Lesley and Brooke Failor, all of Quincy; five great-grandchildren, Tyler and Madison Kent of Quincy, Lily and James D. (J.D.) Selvy of O*Fallon, Missouri and Gavin Edgar of Liberty; a brother, Bernard J. (Ben) Tensing of Tucson, Arizona; a brother-in-law, Russell Selvy and his wife Jackie of Broomfield, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Darlene) Selvy of Plainville, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Selvy was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be Thursday morning December 15, 2011 at 10:00 am in Vermont Street United Methodist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. Scott Grulke. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and Thursday morning 9:30 am until the time of services at Vermont Street United Methodist Church. Alpha Chapter 109 Order of Eastern Star will conduct services at 4:15 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
