ORVILLE V. OWSLEY JR.
Orville V. Owsley Jr., 80, of Quincy, passed away at 11:06 p.m. Saturday (September 22, 2018) in Blessing Hospital.
Born December 29, 1937 in Roseville, MI, Orville was the son of Orville V. and Helen G. Riley Owsley Sr. He married Jean Ellen Sheeley on September 29, 1962 at the home of his parents in Quincy. Jean survives.
Orville was a member of the QHS Blue Devil Wrestling Team. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 where he served our country proudly as an accomplished military aircraft mechanic.He was a master of getting things done with minimal resources. The Franklin neighborhood children could always count on him to build and repair their bicycles.
Orville was a member of Mississippi Valley Historic Auto Club and Antique Auto Museum, and a proud member of Labor Local 919. He was an avid racing fan. His all time favorite NASCAR driver was the late great Dale Earnhardt Sr. and then Dale Earnhardt Jr. He attended the races at Quincy Raceways either as a fan, driver, or pit crew member, from the time it opened until his death. Orville ran micro midget racecars with his father out of the Owsley Body Shop at 3rd and Maine. Later he ran sportsman and street stock classes at Quincy Raceways. He was a valued pit crew member of his son-in-law, Lonnie Bailey and grandson's, Matthew Bailey and Zach Bruenger's Race Teams.
While in the midst of a late stage cancer battle he fought to get well enough to accompany his entire family to North Carolina's Outer Banks for a once in a lifetime vacation after attending his grandson's wedding in Hickory.
Upon discharge from the military he began work at Packaging Corporation of America. He later worked as a construction laborer with Local 919 until his retirement in 2000.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jean; three children, Paula Bailey (Lonnie) of Quincy, Phyllis Bruenger (Ric) of Granite Falls, N.C., and Rick Owsley (Becky) of Quincy; eight grandchildren, Matthew Bailey (Jenna) and Joshua Bailey (Kayley), Zachary Bruenger (Samantha) and Alex Bruenger, and Paige, Kailey, Jenna, and Carley Owsley. He also had three great grandchildren, Hadley, Elle, and Lincoln Bailey. With three more on the way; two sisters, Ruby Thomas of Quincy and Gloria Shaffer (Bill) of Fowler, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Owsley was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lawrence "Pee Wee" Owsley, Robert Owsley and Donald Owsley; and two sisters, Lorraine Schuerman and Norma Reddick.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Josh Bailey officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and the Scott Air Force Base Funeral Honor Guard will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Wednesday morning from 10:30 until the time of services at the funeral home.
