PAUL DAVID OTTO
Paul David Otto, 85, of Redington Beach, Florida, formerly of Quincy, died at 12:20 p.m. Friday (January 20, 2017) in Mid Pinellas Sun Coast Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida.
Born January 4, 1932 in Quincy, Paul was the son of Earl J. and Gladyez R. Murray Otto. He was a 1949 graduate of Quincy High School and a 1951 graduate of Gem City Business College. Paul also studied at Quincy College and the University of Illinois.
Paul married JoAnn Smith on April 14, 1956. She preceded him in death on June 8, 1996. He married Lois Haynes on July 11, 1998 and she survives.
Mr. Otto served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 until his discharge in 1954.
Paul is a longtime member of First Christian Church in Quincy where he served as a Deacon. He is a member of Twin Oaks Club, North Side Boat Club, Noon Kiwanis, Elks Lodge No. 100, Quincy American Legion Post 37, and was a former member of South Side Boat Club. Paul also served on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the Family Service Agency of Quincy.
Being raised on the Mississippi River, Paul loved the water and boating. In 1994, along with four other men, Paul sailed a sailboat from Florida to Caen, France. He loved to travel and spend time with his family and will be remembered as a man of great character. Paul will be deeply missed.
Paul began his career at Quincy Soybean Products Company in 1955 as an accounting clerk. In 1966, he was elected to the Board of Directors and became Treasurer, was elected Vice President and Treasurer in 1976 and served the company as President from 1984 until his retirement in 1990. Following his retirement, Paul purchased a home in Florida, where he would spend the winter months and then came back to Quincy during the summers.
On January 1, 1993, Paul and his son, Michael, acquired Branch-Hess Vending Company. They later purchased and added Tom's Foods and Snack Time and changed the name to Otto Vending Service, Inc. They have since added the purchase of Mississippi Valley Vending Company. Michael Otto currently serves as President and Paul had been Vice President and Treasurer until recently when he appointed his grandson, Cody Otto to Vice President and his daughter in law, Shelbi Otto as Secretary.
Survivors include two children, Michael E. Otto (Shelbi) of Quincy and Marlena Quessenberry of Seminole, FL; four grandchildren, Brandon Otto (Janette), Cody Otto (Anne), Ryan Quessenberry and Dylan Quessenberry; three great grandchildren, Brody Otto, Joel Meirose and Samantha Fox; two step children, Mike Scoggins (Kathy) and Deb Sherwin; seven step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; a brother, James Otto (Sharon) of Quincy; and many loving nieces and a nephew.
Mr. Otto was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, JoAnn; a grandson, Dayton Otto on September 6, 2015; and two brothers, John E. Otto and Richard Lee Otto.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Keela Neumann officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Friday morning from 9:30 until the time of services at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Mid Pinellas Sun Coast Hospice or the Lift Academy (School) in Seminole, Florida.
