ROBERT W. "BOB" STRONG
Rev. Robert W. "Bob" Strong, 76, of Quincy died at 2:21 a.m. Saturday (June 22, 2013) in Blessing Hospital.
Born April 5, 1937 in Quincy, he was the son of James W. and Clara Edith Huddleston Strong. He married Donna R. Berger in St. Louis on April 30, 1978.
Robert was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ where he was a "son of the congregation" at the church. He served his country in the Air Force. Bob was a 1955 graduate of Camp Point Central High School and received his bachelor's degree from Elmhurst College and his master's of divinity degree from Eden Seminary. He then attended St. Louis University and earned a master's degree in social work. Following his ordination in 1968 at Salem United Church of Christ, Bob was called to his first church, St. James United Church of Christ in St. Louis where he was also Program Director for the UCC Neighborhood Houses. From 1982 until 1990 he was the Pastor at Faith-Salem United Church of Christ in Jennings, MO. In 1990 he became the Administrator at Good Samaritan Home until his retirement in 1999. After his retirement he was called back to the ministry to be the Interim Minister at the Mendon, Illinois First Congregational United Church of Christ for four years and then at the Emerson, Missouri Disciples of Christ Christian Church from 2002 until 2012. During this time he was also serving as a Speech Instructor at John Wood Community College and had been an instructor at Gem City Business College where he taught Accounting and Bookkeeping.
Bob enjoyed cooking, watching old westerns and bargain shopping. He and his wife Donna traveled extensively to many foreign countries. He loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren.
Survivors include; his wife, Donna; one daughter, Sarah Strong (fiance'e Kyle Kromidas) of Amelia Island, FL; one son, Aaron W. Strong (Maggie) of Quincy; three grandchildren, Alexander, Charles and Cecilia Strong.
Mr. Strong was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ with Pastor Ken Kramer officiating. Burial with military honors by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:00 until the time of services at the church.
Memorials may be made to Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ, Emerson Christian Church or to Good Samaritan Home.
