ROBERT M. BURGTORF
Robert M. Burgtorf, 65, of Quincy died at 3:45 pm Tuesday (October 28, 2014) in Blessing Hospital.
Born September 30, 1949, Robert was the son of Oscar Robert and Leona Hively Burgtorf. He was married to Deborah Jansen. He later married Donna Stockdale. She preceded him in death. He married Cheryl L. Verigan on September 28, 1985 in Quincy. She survives.
Robert enlisted into the Army in 1967 and served his country in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded in action.
A 1967 graduate of Quincy High School, Robert enjoyed his daily cup of coffee from McDonald's, doing crossword puzzles, playing games on the computer, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and will be remembered for telling jokes and his ability to make people laugh.
Robert was employed at Ashley Furniture for 10 years, until his retirement in 2008 due to health concerns.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl; his mother, Leona Altgilbers of Quincy; three daughters, Roberta M. Boehme (Chuck) of Mendon, Rachael M. Edwards of Monroe City, MO and Stephanie L. Bauer of Quincy; three sons, Robert M. Burgtorf, Jr. of Colorado, Timothy A. Burgtorf (Krissy) of Kimberling City, MO and PFC Christopher G. Burgtorf (fiancee Samantha Griffith) of Quincy; three sisters, Carol Lindsey of Quincy, Sharon Cheney (Phillip Conner) of Quincy and Kim Winking (Jim Cunningham) of Quincy; several loving grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Burgtorf was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Robert Burgtorf; his step father, Richard J. Altgilbers, Sr.; one sister Janet Ann Jackson; and one brother in law, Timothy Lindsey.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park with Military Honors by the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail.
Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Monday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.
