RONALD L. GILBERT
Ronald Lee "Ronnie" Gilbert, 82, of Quincy, passed away at 9:26 am Monday (January 1, 2018) in Good Samaritan Home.
Born May 10, 1935 in Adams County near Columbus, Illinois, Ronnie was the son of Earl C. and Olah Meta Whitlock Gilbert. He married Shirley Lee Schuermann on June 1, 1957 in the Columbus Christian Church in Columbus, Illinois. She survives.
Mr. Gilbert proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Ronnie was a member of the Liberty Christian Church, a 48 year member of the Mendon Masonic Lodge No. 449 where he was a Past Master, Quincy Consistory, Quincy Masonic High Twelve Club No. 40 and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO. He enjoyed gardening, collecting John Deere Tractors and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.
First and foremost in Ronnie's working life was his love of farming the family farm for 59 years. Mr. Gilbert was a graduate of Maplewood High School in Camp Point, Illinois and attended Gem City Business College. He was employed at Quincy Rug Works for 9 years and then at Electric Wheel in Quincy for 17 years until their closing. Ronnie later worked in Enviromental Services at the Illinois Veteran's Home for 24 years until his retirement in 2002.
Survivors include his wife Shirley; two daughters, Sherry Lee Cress (Stephen) of Quincy and Pennie Lee Seals (Duane) of Quincy; a son, Ronald Lee Gilbert II (Beverly) of Ursa, IL; two granddaughters, Stephanie Lauren Yuchs of Quincy and Ashlee Nicole Cress of Quincy; a great granddaughter, Aylah Mae Duncan of Mendon, IL; and many nieces and nephews.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Ted Gilbert, Dale Gilbert and George "Joe" Gilbert.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Henry officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park with Military Honors by the Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Friday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home. Mendon Masonic Lodge No. 449 will conduct Masonic services Thursday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Blessing Cancer Center or the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
