   Roy Marlin Gates, 94, of Quincy passed away from this life into eternal rest at 6:40 p.m. Thursday (February 12, 2015) in Good Samaritan Home.

   Born November 4, 1920, in Liberty, Illinois, Roy was the son of Elmer R. and Ora Zeh Gates.  He married Marjorie Lease on November 1, 1943, in Plainville, Illinois.  She survives.
   Roy graduated from Quincy High School in 1939 and attended the College of Advanced Traffic, specializing in Freight Traffic Management and Interstate Commerce Law and Practice.  Roy also attended Northwestern University School of Commerce.

   Mr. Gates served his country as a Crew Chief in the Army Air Force during World War II.

      Roy was a member of the Herman Masonic Lodge No. 39 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Quincy.  He was conferred the 33rd degree, the highest award in Masonry, on September 29, 1982, in St. Louis, Missouri.  Roy was a long time member of the United Methodist Church and had served the Lord at Melrose Chapel in many areas of leadership, including being a Certified Lay Speaker, for more than 48 years.  He was a member of the Board and Executive Committee at Sunset Home, serving as Vice President, Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee.  He was also an active member of the Quincy Chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmens Fellowship, serving as its Vice President, Secretary and on the Board of Directors.  Roy was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Great Commission Broadcasting Corporation, owners and operators of WGCA-FM Christian Radio.  He served as President of the Board in 1987 when the station signed on the air.  For more than 11 years he served as a member of Word of Life Prison Ministry. He was a member of Uncle Sam's Volunteers and a volunteer devotional leader at Good Samaritan Home and was a member of the National Industrial League and theVice President of the Illinois Territory Industrial Traffic League.  He was also a member of the Midwest Shippers Advisory Board.

   Roy was employed for more than 40 years in Industrial Traffic Management and Interstate Commerce Law and Practice.  He was the Commissioner of the Quincy Freight Bureau for 17 years and was the Assistant Traffic Manager at Quincy Soybean Company for 13 years.

   Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Gloria Seright (Gary) of Surprise, AZ; a grandson, Aaron Hunsaker (Melissa) and their children, Emily and Harper; a step grandson, Mathew Seright (Kathy); a step granddaughter, Lisa Brandon and her children, Lane, Anna and Nathaniel.  Also surviving is a niece and two nephews.

   Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Gates; and one sister, Helen Gates.

   Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:30 in Melrose Chapel with Rev. Ron George officiating.  Burial will be in Payson New Cemetery with Military Honors by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail .

   Visitation will be Monday morning from 9:30 until the time of services at Melrose Chapel.

   Memorials may be made to Melrose Chapel or to the Good Samaritan Home.
