Steven Wayne "Steve" Straus, 59, of Quincy, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Sunday (December 2, 2018) in Good Samaritan Home.
Born September 11, 1959 in Beardstown, Illinois, Steve was the son of Gary and Kay Lightle Straus. He married Valerie A. Bergstrom Shelton on July 24, 2010 in Quincy. She survives.
Steve was a 1977 graduate of Quincy High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and proudly served from April 21, 1977 until his discharge on December 27, 1982.
Steve began his career with the City of Quincy in 1982 where he was a heavy equipment operator and was best known as the street sweeper for the city. He retired after 35 years in December 2017 because of his health.
Steve was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed playing softball and bowling with his team in various leagues. Music was a passion of Steve's and he loved singing Karaoke. He enjoyed as he called it "Grillin and Chillin" in his back yard with his family and friends. Steve kept his sense of humor throughout his illness and always loved making others laugh or smile. He will be remembered for the many jokes and pranks he pulled by his family, friends and co-workers.
Survivors include his wife, Valerie; his parents, Gary and Kay Straus of Quincy; a son, Travis Straus (Jamie Massingill) of Quincy; three step sons, John Shelton (Jodie), Jacy Shelton (Nikki) and Jacob Shelton (Nicole Cook) all of Quincy; six grandchildren, Kelsie Travis (Jack Presley), Korgan Travis (Garrett Dietrich) Ashton Bence, Aisley Bence, Kaylie Straus and Landon Straus; ten step grandchildren, Jettry Shelton, Jaslyn Shelton, Kayla Slown (Bryce), Bailey Link (Corbin), Sean Justice, Emilee Hamilton, Jesa Shelton, Jerres Shelton, Jennah Shelton and Jaxsen Shelton; three great grandchildren; a brother, Michael Straus of Mt. Sterling, IL; two sisters, Terri White (Tom) of Grenada, MS and Dana Glover (Danny Witthouse) of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents; a daughter, Corrie Straus; a son, Jermy Straus; and a step son, Jerred Shelton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Chaplain Chuck Lightle and Jacy Shelton officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturday afternoon from 1:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Great River Honor Flight.
