VETA R. SCHAUF
Veta Ruth Schauf, 88, of the Iowa Veteran's Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Quincy, died at 10:05 a.m. Monday (October 10, 2016) at the Iowa Veteran's Home.
Born August 30, 1928 on the Dempsey family farm near Fowler, Illinois, Veta was the daughter of Elmer and Ruth Seckman Dempsey. She married Russell M. Cory on May 22, 1948 in Quincy. She married Dr. Edward G. Schauf on July 6, 1975 in Quincy. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1996.
Veta was a former member of First United Presbyterian Church of Quincy, where she was active with the Mariners Club, Women's Association, Adult Choir, taught Sunday School, was a Youth Fellowship Director and Director of the Cherub Choir. She also was a Brownie Troop Leader and active with the Dewey School PTA.
A 1946 graduate of Quincy High School, Veta was employed as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell Telephone. She later was a bookkeeper for Illinois Power Company in East St. Louis and then was the co-owner and operator of The Silhouette Bridal Shoppe in Quincy for 10 years, retiring in 1975.
Veta was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and a friend to many. Survivors include two daughters, April O'Donnell of Green Brier, TN and Deborah Cory Freeman (Don) of Palm Bay, FL; two sons, James Cory (Joanne) of Ankeny, IA and Russell (Rustie) Cory of Champaign, IL; a step daughter, Jean Schauf Kinser of Debary, FL; eleven grandchildren, Michael (Janice) O'Donnell of Nashville, TN, Christopher Morrison (Stephanie) of Tucson, AZ, Melinda (Lee) Morrison of Palm Bay, FL, Joseph (Sara) Cory of Birmingham, AL, Angela Cory Remington of Omaha, NE, Michael Cory, Katherine Cory (Erin) Eskey and Sean Cory all of San Diego, CA, Tyler Kinser and Austin Kinser of Elgin, IL and Dylan Dana of Apopka, FL; eleven great grandchildren, Eric Nelson, Cory O'Donnell, Sarah Rae Robinson, Lyric Cory Micalena Morrison of Tucson, AZ, Abby Cory, Margot Cory, Jack Cory, Betsy Cory, Natalie Cory and Jude Cory; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Veta was preceded in death by her parents; her step father, G.T. Haubrich; her husband, Dr. Ed Schauf; three brothers, Harley Dempsey, Charlie Dempsey and Gerald Dempsey; two sisters, Mary Dempsey Pryor and Della Dempsey Greer; a step son, Edward Michael Schauf; a granddaughter, Wendy O'Donnell; and a grandson, James Michael Cory II.
Graveside services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in Greenmount Cemetery with the Rev. Orville Jones officiating.
There is no visitation, but friends are invited to attend the graveside service. The Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa Veterans Home Ulery North Activities Fund or the Quincy Chapter Alzheimer's Association.
