Virgil Hochgraber

July 3, 1923 ~ July 14, 2015 (age 92)

   Virgil Hochgraber,  92, of Quincy, died at 7:43 am Tuesday (July 14, 2015) in his home.

   Born July 3, 1923 in Quincy, Virgil was the son of Esra and Dorothy Blickhan Hochgraber.  He married Ramona Bowder on June 9, 1949 in Quincy.  She survives.

   Mr. Hochgraber served his country in the U. S. Navy during WW II, seeing action in the South Pacific.  Virgil was proud to go on the Great River Honor Flight on June 24, 2011.

   A 61 year member of Central Baptist Church where he was active with the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class, Virgil was also a member of the Elks Lodge No. 100, the Great River Barbershop Quartet and was a supporter of Quincy High School Athletics and Music Departments.  He was a gifted woodworker who made many projects for his family and will be remembered for passing out candy to anyone and everyone he met.

   For many years, Virgil loved helping others by volunteering at Blessing Hospital, most recently as the shuttle driver and helping with the Horizons Soup Kitchen.  It is estimated Virgil helped nearly 700 people by donating blood to the American Red Cross, becoming the top blood donor with the Adams County Chapter, donating over 25 gallons over the years. Virgil  was recently donating platelets and plasma for the Red Cross.

   Virgil was employed as a truck driver for Garrelt's Wholesale, Tri State School Sales and Marlboro Wire.  He later was employed at the Illinois Veteran's Home working in the power house until his retirement.

   Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ramona; four children, Diane Ladd (Dan) of Denver, CO, Dennis Hochgraber (Debra) of Mesquite, TX, Lu Plunk (Steve) of Liberty, IL and Larry Hochgraber (Karen) of Quincy; ten grandchildren, Danielle Ladd, Deanna Reese (Wallace), Dori Brown (Jimmy), Tyler Reed (Kristi), Steve "Junior" Plunk, Amanda Makward (Robert),  Crystal Plunk, David Hochgraber, Matthew Hochgraber (Abbie) and Thomas Hochgraber; thirteen great grandchildren, Alyssa, Wesley, Wyatt, Carter, Maci, Austin, Ashley, Ella, Chloe, Teegan, Noah, Madison and Nicholas; a brother, Earl Hochgraber (Joan) of Quincy; a sister in law, Betty Hochgraber of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Hochgraber was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Edgar "Ted" Hochgraber and Wesley Hochgraber.    

   Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning (July 22, 2015) at 10:00 in Central Baptist Church. Services will be conducted  by Dr. Dennis Hochgraber and  Dr. Ivan Greuter.  Burial with military honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Tuesday evening (July 21, 2015) from 4:00 to 7:00 at Central Baptist Church and Wednesday morning from 9:00 until the time of services at the church.

   The Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

   Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church.
