Virginia Huston, 104, of Quincy, died at 12:13 p.m. Monday (December 18, 2017) in Sunset Home.
Born May 3, 1913 in Quincy, Virginia was the daughter of Henry Charles and Hester Naumann Mueller. She married Vern Huston on July 3, 1970 in Quincy. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1985.
Virginia was a graduate of Quincy High School, Carthage College and earned her Masters Degree from Northwestern University in Chicago. She furthered her education at Chicago University and Western Illinois University.
An active member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church for many years, Virginia was also a member of the Vermont Street United Methodist Church Women's Society, American Association of University Women, Illinois State Teachers Association, Retired Teachers Association, Quincy Art Center, Adams County Historical Society and was a former member of Delta Cappa Gamma Sorority. Virginia was a longtime volunteer at Sunset Home, Quincy Museum and the Gardner Museum.
Virginia began her teaching career in 1935 and taught two years in country schools in Lima and Mendon. In 1937 she became a teacher for the Quincy Public Schools where she taught intermediate grades at Adams School and later at Berian School, for a total of 38 years. She retired in 1975.
Survivors include five nephews, Richard Eykamp (Rita) of Evansville, IN, Dr. William Eykamp (Muriel) of Arlington, MA, Don Mueller of Dublin, OH, David Mueller of Cary, N.C. and James Mueller of Akron, OH; and Katie Huston, the wife of Vern Huston's deceased nephew, Marion Huston of Good Hope, IL.
Mrs. Huston was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vern; a sister, Dorothy Eykamp; and a brother, Lowell Mueller.
Cremation arrangements are in the care of Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy.
Memorial services will be held Friday morning (April 6, 2018) at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Patty Johansen officiating. Inurnment will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday morning (April 6, 2018) from 9:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.
